Why I can’t play LoL
Okay, so this is going to sound like i’m complaining. Maybe I am, but I figured I should share it with you. But first a little context about me and video games before I start slagging on a very popular one. I’m and old school gamer through and through. I cut my teeth on Final Fantasy for the NES. I’ve been playing online FPSs since gamespy was called Quake Spy, and 2fort4 is the only TF map that I ever want to play on. I used to come home after high school everyday and speed run Tony Hawk 3. I watch sc2casts constantly, and the first paid article I ever wrote was on Barcraft. I breath videogames. I just want people who only read this article to know this. I feel like getting my cred out there.
I can’t play LoL. (I’m not very good at Micro, which is why i’ll never make my way out of Diamond League at sc2). The real problem tho is don’t want to play LoL. I think it’s a really fun take on DoTA that is a lot easier to get into, and has really cool features. I really want to like LoL. But every time I sit down to play a game. Somebody calls me a fag. Somebody calls one of my team mates gay. Someone’s name is ‘IKillFags’. It’s a giant punch in the gut, and it completly makes me not want to play the game.
A side note on language. I’m gay. I am not here to say who can and can’t use words. One of my favorite bands is MSI. They have a song ‘Faggot’. I feel physically ill every time I listen to it (which is rarely!). I don`t feel like going into why I feel that way, but I assure you, it`s pretty reasonable. I don’t think MSI is wrong for writing the song, but it means i’m never quite sure if I want to go to one of their concerts.
This is my reaction when I play games. When my opponent was named ‘IKillFags’ I asked him about it, the conversation went something like this:
Me: What’s up with your name? It’s really offensive.
Him: Oh yeah, I just wanted to see how long I could use it before I got banned.
Me: You’ve been using it long?
Him: About a week now, maybe 20 games.
Me: *clicks report*
You know why I can’t play LoL? It’s because of people like him. Yes, I know he doesn’t actually hate gay people. Yes I know he is just trolling. Yes I know the other players who calls me ‘gay’ for buying boots first instead of a ring is just using a common vernacular phrase. Y’know what? I don’t care. Everytime ‘IKillFags’ killed me, I got so fucking angry. I killed him back, and I felt: Nothing. Vengence was hollow, and I was left feeling sad.
About 1/2 my games of LoL ended that way, me just clicking report and feeling bad. I always thought ‘gee my reports are doing good’ until I met ‘IKillFags’ and realized that my reports generally did nothing. I found a thread up there… looks like it takes about 200 reports spread over about 100 games to get someone banned, for a week.
So that’s what it comes down to. Whenever I play LoL, I have a 50% percent chance of just feeling a mix of sadness and anger at the end of any game. It’s just not enjoyable. I’m not saying that these people are wrong, or that Riot needs to be harsher with their penalties. I’m not saying that you can’t call something you dislike ‘gay’, or someone who disagrees with you a ‘fag’. I’m saying if Riot doesn’t change their policies, I won’t want to play their game, and if you keep using language like that, I won’t want to be your friend, I won’t want to listen to your pod cast, I won’t want to interact with you in pretty much any way. Why? Because it’s just a bummer for me.

is there a way to play 2fort4 again? like get the mac’s going w/ an emulator or something? I miss it desperately.
