So once a week Het-Bot is looking to do a rundown of an issue raised during the most recent My Little Pony episode. This week we are looking at Season 2, Episode 15. While there is a lot to unpack from the episode about labor’s need to control the means of production, I wanted to start with a focus on something a little smaller. If you like the format, feel free to write up a response to the question, or ask a new question about this week’s episode.
Question 1: During the beginning of the episode, Dash pulls off the covers from her sleeping friend Fluttershy, who blushes and covers up her naked body in a cute visual gag. Not to make a mountain out of a mole-hill, but what’s the deal with ponies and body image? We’ve never seen a fat pony*, although Fluttershy is depicted as being a little bit skinnier than all her classmates as a child. As ‘adults’ the main cast stars in multiple fashion shows. Is body image an issue the show could be addressing, and how? Is there anything to be learned from how they are addressing the issue now?
Response 1: Is accepting your friends, regardless of their body not an important lesson about friendship? If the answer is ‘There are no fat ponies’ then the message to fat girls and boys is that there is something wrong with them, that they don’t belong in Equestria. If the answer is ‘Everyone in equestria already knows that it’s not nice to be mean to a person just because they look different than you’ then MLP is just sweeping a difficult subject under the rug. When I was young, my favorite show was star trek, and there were no gay characters on it. (Okay, I loved ds9, but I didn’t know.) The subtext to me was always ‘in the future, there aren’t going to be any gays’. The federation is supposed to be this glorious shining tomorrow, filled with only straight people. It was a total downer. Is Equestria a magical land of friendship, but only for skinny ponies?
Response 2: I haven’t seen enough MlP to really judge about how they handle body image, but I wanted to comment on this episodes portrayal of how the ponies lusted after the apple cider. The girls all desperately wanted to drink that sweet, sugary cider, and never, not once, did they worry about it going to their hips. None of them had any anxiousness about eating what they want, when they want! Which isn’t exactly easy for girls, so go ponies!

*and yes I know, there was a background foal in season 2 who was a little rounder, which doesn’t really count.
